As some of you may know already, on 5th April we in Moldova had Parliament elections. As expected, the Communist Party got the biggest part of the votes:
  • Communist Party about 50% (61 places in Parliament from 101 possible)
  • Liberal Party about 12.8% (15 places)
  • Liberal-Democrat Party about 12.3% (14 places)
  • "Our Moldova" Alliance about 9.8% (11 places)
So communists having 2/3 of the places can elect they alone the president and the entire government.
But what wasn't expected, by me at least, is what happened today. Peace demonstrations against communists (I don't know the exact number, but from different sources till 30,000 people most being young people) turned suddently into violence. The Parliament building, Government building and President building being attacked.
I do understand the feelings of the people that will have to leave under communist party for another 4 years, but what happened today was just crazy and out of any control. Yes, till the end of the day the things calmed down and Voronin (our current president.. and yes, he is communist) agreed the votes to be manually re-counted but i am sure this would not change things too much. Seems like some of the leaders of opposite parties got it too and they ask now for re-elections, but i am afraid a lot of people that voted fot them would vote against them just because what happened today. And.... even with re-elections.. what would they expect? Yeah, probably some of the people that voted for communists will vote someone else now, but it will not change too much the general picture. The thing is that the biggest part of the votes that communists got are from old people that lived in USSR and they are used to it. But other did it with the following reasons:
  • who else? there are no REAL good leaders here
  • the communists are here for last 8 years, so they stolen all was possible so now maybe they will work for the country. While if someone new will get the power, they will start stealing the country for themselves. (here is to be said that it is a known fact that ANY good business in Moldova now is "under" president's son. Anything, business wise, that at some point started to work well and bring income, by one or other way got to belong to Oleg Voronin)
and many more like that.

My personal thought on this is (and why i knew from the start communists will win again) that:
  • Democrats and liberals are too selfish and too "power starved" to agree to go to elections as one power. This is why we had 12 parties in election lists. So they split their votes and many of them that i thought would get into the next Parliament did not even get the needed 6% of votes
  • There wasn't ENOUGH (it never can be enough) work with the people about elections from the liberal and democrat side. As result less than 60% of the people voted. And taking in consideration that usually old people are more organized in this and most of them voted the communists...
  • Before the elections communists (having all the power) made all possible to make look the opposition bad in peoples eyes.
  • About 30% of the people who have the right to vote, work now outside the country. Officially that's about 670,000 persons, but by many sources (and i do believe it) there are over 1 mln people working outside the country. And almost none of them voted. Yeah, there was about 5,000 votes (i think) in Italy (where i am sure work at least 200,000 - 300,000 people from Moldova) another 3,000-5,000 probably voted from Russia (where work even more people that in Italy). From other countries the number of votes can not even be taken in consideration. So, that 30% that would vote against the Communists did vote by one or other cause (one of them being the fact that they physically didn't have the possibility to do it)

So, being said just that, how would expect liberals and democrats to win this elections? I have no idea. Yes, i didn't vote for communists, and the most people i know did not vote for them too. So what? It doesn't change the picture too much. About 30% couldn't vote because being outside the country. About 15% votes lost on parties that did not get the minimum of 6%. Another 10%-15% on those who voted the communists just because they didn't know well others or by the reasons i pointed earlier. And so we got what we got.
Ah! forgot to say. Today when all this started, we got total informational blockade: phone lines was down; internet connection to/from/in Moldova - down; buses with people from regions not allowed to enter in Chisinau (capital where all this happened); buses with people from Romania that wanted to enter the country stopped at the country border; even journalists from other countries (Romania at least) were not allowed to enter the country!

Down are some photos from today and a video.
